Lake Auburn road race CAT4, June 2006
After a solid effort with about 5 other guys on lap 2 including Michael Good we head into lap 3. We descend at a screaming ~40 miles after the opposing hill to finish the prior lap. Shortly there after we are faced with another hill climb; Michael is grinding away looking down and silently cursing himself, his bike and his equipment condition. His front deraileur is failing him. Just then *BOoOM* he rides into a stopped rider who's dropped his chain. The guy was perpendicular to the road, just standing there like an oaf. I softly tumble into Michael as he falls to the right into the road in front of me. I rudely ask the chain-dolt if he's posing for a picture; this may have earned me fame alone.
Michael is ok and his bike is working order. We remount along with a CCB rider and now the pack is long gone. I just tell Michael that we are going to rotate and work our way back onto the group- to which he replies he doesn't know if he can. The three of us put in big efforts at 25-30mph chase speed. Within 3 miles (10 min) we catch the follow car and the pack. Once rejoined everything feels like it is standing still; the 23mph cruising speed we are at now feels effortless. I couldn't believe it- adrenaline has me high as a kite and I'm viewing life in slow motion as my brain is operating at high speed. The finish wasn't as important to me as this having been the the best I've ever been a part of.
